Does the new ASET beneficial to hourly employees? Part 2

Image: Gregory Szarkiewicz / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

ASET according to RGIS
The newly overhauled ASET is a profit generating novelty designed by RGIS. The company has boasted strategic gains in 2009 despite the significant reduction of many big accounts and frequency of inventories for the last 12 months.

So, the logical question would be: How did RGIS managed to hit a good strategic gains? The key answer lies on how the company  streamlines its expenditures, and other cost-effective measures which includes but not limited to:
  • Significant reduction of employees from the middle and upper management positions.
  • Salary paycuts.
  • Getting rid of administrative employees in District levels.
  • Cutting of administrative costs such as supplies, equipment, orders, hiring, department budgets, and other expenditures.
  • IT Infrastructure projects such as deployments, purchases, software development, etc. have been postponed or cancelled.
  • The standardization of pay thru the introduction of ASET system, for hourly employees which gave RGIS better control over "unwanted raises and exceeding pay cap."
  • Strategic alliances thru acquisitions in the last 5 years, more significantly that from Blackstone Group.

"... the RGIS hourly employee could lost an average
of $3,366.00 per year since the ASET has been
implemented, more than enough to purchase
travel and accommodations for 2 to the
Bahamas Island of Paradise!"

These streamlining factors of the company were more than enough to cover potential losses brought about by the recession from 2008 until 2009. Now, that is as far as RGIS management side is concerned. How about its hourly employees? Do hourly employees really benefited from the standardization of pay as evidenced by the creation of the ASET system?

The answer depends entirely to whom the question was addressed:

From the management point of view:

more work + the same pay + less hours = better profit

From the hourly employee point of view:

more work + the same pay + less hours = lesser income

ASET according to its hourly employees
For the next 3 minutes, I am going to prove that ASET may generate lesser income for the hourly Auditor and therefore, disadvantageous in that aspect. Since the creation of APH, speed has been increased, with the same pay, for a lesser time.

Observation shows that an average of 35% of inventory time has been reduced after the implementation of the new ASET compared to average inventory time before its implementation. Below is a similar data taken from a middle size grocery store. The actual store name was witheld.

Store Name : FCC
Expected merchandise quantity: 250,000

Variables                            Before ASET     |           After ASET
______________________________________________________________

Average Merchandise        250,000                       250,000
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Store APH requirements       3,000                           4,270
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Average Inventory time       6.1 hrs.                         4.4 hrs
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Staffing requirements          14                                12
______________________________________________________________

Observations:

  1. An RGIS Auditor could lost an average of 1.7 hrs per inventory event.
  2. APH store requirements also have increased.
  3. Inventory Time has dramatically decreased.
Since RGIS has increased the APH and we know that pay is directly commensurate to the amount of time you have peformed to a given inventory, statistically, you get a relatively lesser income. Even if RGIS argues that productivity depends from store to store, still, the truth remains:

A taxi carrying 3 people running at 60 mph to a designated point will likely to arrive first than a taxi carrying 2 people running at 45 mph with the same destination point under normal driving conditions. Extrapolate this to a 10-taxi scenario and you get the average results. That is exactly the same principle when I said that:

more work + the same pay + less hours = lesser income

In statistics, we speak of averages. Lets apply the above data:
  • Possible lost hours average per day (assuming you only work 1 store per day): 1.7 hrs
  • Possible lost hours average per week (assuming you work 5 stores a week): 8.5 hrs
  • Possible lost hours per month: 34 hrs
  • Possible lost hours per year (excluding low month: December): 374 hrs
To calculate possible income losses for the whole year:

374 X $9.00 (assuming your starting pay is $9) = $3,366.00

Therefore, the RGIS hourly Auditor could lost an average of $3,366.00 per year since the ASET has been implemented, more than enough to purchase travel and accommodations for 2 to the Bahamas Island of Paradise!

From your District alone, how much profit does RGIS can get per year assuming that your District performs 3,000 inventories per year? Do the math.

  1. WFC is the worst scam of all.If it`s a full inventory. probably at least a quarter or more of the total pieces are on the prelists, which the friends and relatives get to do.Nothing like doing prelists at at least 10K per hour to fluff up the APH.These few people are the ones that make the 3,500 APH for the store--the rest of the sorryass auditors ( with the exception of the people in the candy bars, power bars,or checkout dump bins--wildass guesser`s delight--)will never come close to making APH because they`re counting the bread or deli crap, or freezers, or even worse, the goddam housewares or books. If you`re smart you`ll just take your time in there since you can`t come close to making APH unless you get the good shit to count.

  2. Hi, I work at a Canadian RGIS. I would like to get some tips on getting my APH over 1000. I do not use the finger laser. Should I be? Any advice would be appreciated.

  3. TK,
APH is relative. It all depends on the kind of store you are counting. Even if you are doing grocery counts, it varies from store to store. APH on groceries can go as low as 1,700APH to as high as 10,000APH. It also depends on your ASET
level as well. For example, store APH for SEARS
Canada or US, ranges between 950 to 1000. Personal ASET level starts from 750 for Auditors, 850 for Specialists, 950 for Experts, and 1200 for TopGuns.

Finger lasers are handy dandy tools but they don't guarantee a higher APH. They are most helpful on autoscan areas where little or no space to fit in for when using the regular lasers built-into the RM machines such as small pegs in the accessories areas in the tools department of SEARS or in the lingerie department.

Otherwise, the built-in laser of the bulky and CTS-friendly RM can do most of the job. Remember, your APH is calculated with or without the finger laser in mind. So, as long as you are hitting you personal APH, you shouldn't worry about. Unless if you are striving to elevate your APH to a higher ASET level.

The only problem will be is when you are consistently hitting below your expected APH level. In that case, you better start reading the local Classified Section of your local newspaper and start looking for another job. RGIS is pretty serious about APH this time.

  5. The new finger lasers almost guarantee an increase in aph. when our district received the lasers our aph almost doubled in our stores.

  6. Anonymous friends,
Good point anonymous1. I have to agree with you that whe run stores, you can get as high as 16.00 per hour. And I am a supervisor myself. RGIS rewards the following persons with added responsibilities at inventory stores: (1)If you are a SUPERVISOR, you can get between $1.50 and S3.00 per hour on top of your ASET hourly rate depending on the size of the store you run.

When you are running a Manager's store, you can even get as high as $3.50 per hour on top of your ASET rate, but that all depends on your local district's policies. But as we all know, the added rate will only affect when you RUN a store. Otherwise, if you scheduled to a store just to count, then your regular ASET rate will apply. 2)If you are given an ADDER responsibility, such as a PROWLER, you can get additional of $1.00 to $2.00 on top of your ASET rate.

And if you happened to count a BONUS store, you can even get a dollar or two when your paycheck arrives.

  7. more...

Again, the downside of ASET levels is you get shorter hours of counting. For example, GroceryA that you used to count prior to ASET has 5.6 hours of counting. Now after the ASET, it dropped to 4.3 hours of counting. And this alone could cut your pay check by almost $18.00 (assuming that you are a specialist or an expert).

The most common ways to fatten your paycheck is to kick your ass off (to borrow your own word. I like it by the way :)), increase your work availability, run more stores. OR, if you like, be an Area Manager! in that case, you can get as high as $38,000 a year plus bonuses, plus a car/van and insurance, 401K, medical, etc.

  8. frydfairy,

That's a good point and I bet RGIS will agree with your observation. Otherwise, your district won't be able to get as much fingerlasers for your inventories. I do not posses an actual RGIS statistics as far as how much increase of APH and decrase of inventory time when finger lasers have introduced to all local districts nationwide.

But I am pretty sure that there are benefits of fingerlasers aside from the fact that you can use its cord to strangle the most hated and laziest area manager in your district, ha! ha!

1.)It lessen the occurence of CTS(carpal tunnel syndrome). Try to hold the bulky RM with your hand for auto scanning for the next 30 minutes and you will know what I mean. Visit this link for a fact sheet on CTS:

    http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/carpal_tunnel/detail_carpal_tunnel.htm

2.) It drops medical and chiropractic claims against RGIS. If you have developed CTS and you know that it is job or RGIS related, and you feel that you need medical or surgical attention, then you MAY have the right to a claim.

2.) It feels so comfortably and handy dandy.

3.) It is a good way to increase AND elevate you ASET level. However, for lazy asses (again, to borrow anonymous1), it is not a guarantee.

Do you think of any more benefits of fingerlaser?

  9. for those who have no business sense, your blog makes a lot of cents!!!(what you would be earning in 3-5 years if not for the changes we had to make)
RGIS was headed to bankruptcy or worst if not for the drastic and much needed changes to pay and structure. In my district for example we had people making well over $13.00 an hour that could not out count my 6 year old son. Take that and times it by 6000 and you have a sinking ship. ASET and P4 saved everybodys job and you should be thankful that you still have a job.

"ASET and P4 saved everybodys job and you should be thankful that you still have a job.?"

Really? Save everybody's jobs? How many thousands of RGIS hourly employees have lost their jobs because the ASET APH are high that many couldn't keep up the minimum APH expectations? APH is process of weeding out slower RGIS employees. That's a cold fact.

ASET didn't save the company because nothing is supposed to be saved in the first place. Instead, ASET gains MORE profit for the company. Now, it is probably the best profit-making strategy that RGIS has developed for the last 10 years.

RGIS executives at Auburn Hills have corroborated this observation many times. As everybody knows, the company has gained some significant profits despite the recession in 2008 and 2009.

RGIS was never headed to a bankruptcy or at least consider such move. In fact, RGIS was so competitive that it acquired 3 more inventory services as part of its global expansion PRIOR to Blackstone's acquisition of the company.

Unless somebody can dispute the facts being presented. Thank You.
